ESGR in the News

FORT HARRISON, Mont. – Information was the name of the game as Montana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve volunteer Tim Fox presented a pre deployment brief to the Army Reserve 650th AG CO – Adjutant General Company (Human Resources).

Master Sgt. Eric Guntermann, Army Guard Reserve (AGR) Operations arranged for the briefing which included an overview of ESGR and their awards program. Most importantly, Reserve members became aware of their rights and responsibilities under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).

USERRA is a Federal law intended to ensure that persons who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, Reserve, National Guard, or other uniformed Services: (1) are not disadvantaged in their civilian careers because of their service; (2) are promptly reemployed in their civilian jobs upon their return from duty; and (3) are not discriminated against in employment based on past, present, or future military service.

The law encourages non-career uniformed service so the United States can enjoy the protection of those Services, staffed by qualified people, while maintaining a balance with the needs of private and public employers who also depend on these same individuals.

Members of the 650th AG CO (Human Resources) are responsible for advising the commander of all HR matters, supervising the strength and distribution of Soldiers within the unit, and projecting and communicating shortages to the Human Resources Command.

As with most Army Reserve units, of the 13 in attendance, only one resided in Montana. Fox however, informed them ESGR is available to everyone and has a presence in every state and territory. He encouraged them to visit ESGR.mil to reach out to personnel in their area who could help them with further connections and information.

Fox stressed several points with the Reserve members to included communicating with their employers, nominating their employers for an ESGR Patriot Award and asking their boss to attend an ESGR Boss lift. The ESGR Bosslift is an employer outreach program gives public and private employers an opportunity to see their employees on the job when they are away from their civilian occupations. The Bosslift experience takes place throughout the U.S. and ranges from mock convoy operations to video-simulated firefights, to flying or a briefing and tank range shooting.

ESGR is celebrating 50 years as a Department of Defense program which develops and promotes supportive work environments for Service members in the Reserve Components through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR has also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between the Service members and their employers.
