NORRISTOWN, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced today that Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was honored with a Seven Seals Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.
According to Wes Craig ESGR Southeast Area Chair and Pennsylvania State Chair Emeritus, “The Seven Seals Award is the broadest and most inclusive award given by ESGR and is presented at the discretion of the State Chair or by ESGR senior leadership. The award is presented in recognition of significant individual or organizational achievement, initiative, or support that promotes and supports the ESGR mission.”
Sgt. 1st Class Jon Mazza from the Pennsylvania Air Guard nominated the Sheriff’s Office for the award because of the very strong support he received during periods of short mobilization notifications. According to Mazza: “Deputy Sheriffs and staff members were granted military leave of absences without hassles.”
In addition, Craig was told by those in attendance that the Sheriff’s Office maintained contact with deployed service members during long absences and welcome back celebrations were held when service members returned from duty.
Sheriff Sean Kilkenny accepted the Seven Seals Award during a ceremony outside the Montgomery County Courthouse. Upon receiving the award, Kilkenny told Craig: “About 30 percent of his total force are in the Guard and Reserve or are veterans.” Kilkenny, a 17-year Army Reserve veteran, added: “Military types make great Deputy Sheriffs, [I] would love to hire more of them.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
