RUTLEDGE, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense program, announced today that Jennifer Mickle, Borough of Rutledge received the ESGR Patriot Award in recognition of the extraordinary support of Borough employees who serve in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.

Mickle was nominated for the award by Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph LaSpina of the Coast Guard Reserve.  LaSpina serves with the Delaware Bay sector and is based in Philadelphia.

Jeffery Hill, an ESGR volunteer in the Southeast Area presented the award to Mickle and said, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.”

In his award nomination LaSpina stated: “Mickle, was very flexible and supportive when he needed time for training and deployments, and even helped his family directly when his home water heater failed while he was deployed.”  In addition to recognizing Mickle’s support, he said of another Borough supervisor: “William Thomas, also encouraged me in my service and checked in with his family when I was serving with my unit.”

In response to LaSpina comments, Mickle said: “Joe is an excellent employee and the Borough is lucky to have him.”

“National Guard and Reserve members bring tremendous skills and capabilities to our workforce, and employer support for their military service is critical to maintaining the strength of our Guard and Reserve units,” said Hill. “By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”
