WASHINGTON – Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III named J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. one of the 15 recipients of the 2021 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, in recognition of the organization’s exemplary support for its National Guard and Reserve employees.
“I am proud to salute the outstanding employers who have earned the distinction of being named Freedom Award recipients as we mark the 25th year of this highly coveted recognition,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III. “The men and women of the National Guard and Reserve make significant contributions to our communities and our national security through their civilian and military careers. We owe a debt of gratitude to these exemplary employers, who by valuing and supporting their employees’ military service, enhance the strength, readiness, and diversity of our National Guard and Reserve forces.”
J.B. Hunt along with 14 other recipients were selected from 3,382 nominations received from Guardsmen and Reservists highlighting how their civilian employers went far beyond what the federal law requires to support them. Celebrating its 25th year, the Freedom Award began in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to recognize exceptional employer support, with 310 honorees to date.
J.B. Hunt supports their military employees by having dedicated staff who design and implement programs for National Guard and Reserve service members, and by offering generous pay, leave, and benefit packages. J.B. Hunt also offers flexible scheduling to accommodate military leave and regularly highlights military employees at company military appreciation events and patriotic ceremonies.
“J.B. Hunt has shown outstanding support and appreciation for my military obligations during my time with the company. That support has encompassed many things including welfare texts and emails, the veteran employee benefits group, a coin honoring my service, a military leave benefits package, and continued moral support when away for military purposes,” said Arkansas Air National Guard Senior Airman Richard Peevy, who nominated the company for the Freedom Award. “I've never had to question the level of support, or the value JB Hunt places in employees who serve(d) in the U.S. Armed Forces. I am extremely grateful for its support, and this special recognition J.B. Hunt is receiving. The level at which the company is committed to ensuring the success of veterans, and current military service members is truly unparalleled.”
John Roberts, president and CEO at J.B. Hunt, underscored how important National Guard and Reserve members are to their workforce.
"As a company that was founded on the vision of a veteran, we are very humbled and honored to receive this award," said Roberts. "Our members of the Guard and Reserve are integral to our nation’s military forces and taking care of them and their families is a commitment that we proudly honor."
The award will be presented to J.B. Hunt by William Wofford, Chair of the Arkansas ESGR State Committee.
