HORSHAM, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced that the AmerisourceBergen is a state committee finalist for the 2021 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award. The finalists include small, large private and public sector employers, nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization.
ESGR received 3,382 nominations for this prestigious award for employers throughout the 50 states, Guam-CNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.
The Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members. On behalf of the Secretary of Defense, ESGR runs the annual award program, which has presented the honor to only 295 employers since 1996.
The Department of Defense will announce the 15 employers selected to receive the 2021 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award by mid-June.
U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Maj. Jeffery Buck nominated AmerisourceBergen for the Freedom Award for their outstanding support of his military career. In his nomination, Buck stated in part: “Each November, AmerisourceBergen (ABC) highlights the important people that make up our military community at ABC. This year’s ‘hire a hero’ campaign highlighted a veteran each week in November on our intranet site and thanked them for all they’ve done for our freedom and for all they continue to do at ABC. Additionally, a ‘hire a hero’ web-based training was delivered to all associates. The focus was to educate all who joined on the importance of hiring from the military. AmerisourceBergen has an established yet growing Veteran Recruiting Strategy that is an integral part of our Talent Acquisition process and approach to hiring. Our mission is to recruit, hire and retain veterans and their families to recruit top talent onto the organization and to increase the value we bring to clients.
The nomination of AmerisourceBergen for the Freedom Award is highly endorsed by the Pennsylvania ESGR Chair, Marty Kuhar, who stated: “AmerisourceBergen Company (ABC) has demonstrated consistent outstanding support for their employees serving in the Reserve Components by receiving four ESGR awards over the last ten years. In addition, they received three separate nominations for the Freedom Award this year. ABC provides strong support and recognition for their military employees with regular recognition in the workplace, their Veterans Day panel discussions highlighting the military service and its benefits to civilian workplace, and extensive recognition on their company intranet and social media platforms.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
