Manahawkin, N.J. - Ms. Jenna Schaal, a Manager in the Emergency Department of Southern Ocean Medical Center, was recently presented the Department of Defense Patriot Award by Richard Burke, the Ocean County Chair for the New Jersey Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Ms. Schaal was nominated for being highly supportive of her reserve component employee, Specialist Deirdre G. McBride, who is currently deployed overseas.

Special McBride is a member of the New Jersey Army National Guard, assigned to the 1/114th Infantry Regiment. In nominating Ms. Schall, McBride stated that Ms. Schaal has gone above and beyond in supporting her during periods where she is required to perform her military duty. In accepting the award, Schaal remarked, “I am very grateful for being nominated for this award. The Southern Ocean Medical Center is committed to being a military friendly organization and to support those who wear the uniform.”

"The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Burke in his presentation. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units, and it’s a pleasure for me to recognize Ms. Schaal with this award.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
