ST.THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Virgin Islands Port Authority supervisor Jeanine Blyden received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award March 12.

Blyden, a warehouse supervisor, was nominated by Omari Forde, a specialist in the Virgin Islands Army National Guard, 610th Quartermaster Company. Forde nominated Blyden because she understands and supports his military duty even when it’s on short notice.

“My supervisor deserves this recognition because she goes beyond the call of her duties,” said Forde. “She has a great understanding when it comes to me leaving for military duty. Whether it may be short notice or in advance, she handles every situation with the highest act of professionalism.”

“He has been a breath of fresh air,” said Blyden. “Honestly, since he came to the department, he has been a great help to all of us.”

Forde, a storekeeper in the Port Authority warehouse section, appreciates all that she does to support his military service.

“She makes it very easy for me to report for duty and not have to worry about job security while being out,” said Forde. “She also helps out in any capacity possible to keep my work on a steady flow, which results in less of a work pile up upon my return from military duty.”

Forde’s military training does impact the section.“Its sad sometimes when he has to go on military leave,” said Blyden. “But we try to maintain it, because when he comes back, he makes it so much easier for us.”

Stanley Jones chairman of the VI-ESGR, assisted by Hollis McIntosh, area chair of St. Croix made the presentation at the VIPA St. Thomas warehouse.

When Forde heard about the Patriot Award during a military outreach briefing, he knew he had to make a nomination.

“I don’t have that down feeling on Sunday about coming to work on Monday. I look forward to Monday,” said Forde. “I enjoy coming to work.”
