Maize Police Chief honored with Department of Defense Patriot Award

MAIZE Kan. – Maize Police Chief Matt Jensby, was honored with a Patriot Award May 15 for superior support of his employee, and member of the United States Air Force Reserve.

Jensby was nominated for the award by U.S. Air Force Reserve Staff Sgt. Catherine Herr, who serves with the 931st Air Refueling Wing, McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita.

“I was chosen for a long term assignment with the 931st Air Refueling Wing,” said Herr.  “This assignment came with very short notice to my employer due to his program manager also leaving for military duty.  There was only a week training period for the transition, yet my employer allowed me to leave with no consequences.  Chief Jensby has been very flexible over my ten-year career with his department to allow me to attend my regularly scheduled Reserve duties but also many other addition commits with the Air Force Reserve.  His support of the military has been evident during each period of military leave that I have taken.  He takes the time to acknowledge the military commitments of his staff to the City Council, community and co-workers.  Many employers do not take the time to express their gratitude for their members performing military duty, and it is reassuring to know there is support within the police department when I return to my civilian job.”

Jensby received the Patriot Award from Kansas ESGR Area Chair, Becky Richardson, at a City Council Meeting.  Also attending was Col. Caroline Evernham, a Command Pilot with the 931st Operations Group.  Evernham expressed her gratitude to the Maize Police Department for their support and described how that support enhances the military mission.

Following the presentation, Chief Jensby signed a Statement of Support, pledging that the Police Department will:

We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

We appreciate the values, leadership, and unique skills Service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists, and Veterans.

We will continually recognize and support our country’s Service members and their families, in peace, in crises, and in war.”
